Hello please could you advise which banks will give you a bank account.Having not had a bank account for the last 2 years(IVA 25 months) and having wages paid into my wife's AC I would like a bank account again and one that allows the use of a cheque book. Thank you

Cheque books generally are on the way out, and you would probably find it difficult to obtain one if you are in an IVA anyway.

You can look at a bank that you don't owe money to whose basic accounts come with a debit card, the Co-Op Cashminder is my personal favourite, but you can look at http://www.moneymadeclear.fsa.gov.uk/pd ... counts.pdf for further info.

Regards.

Spoke to a lovely lady at the coop ,i have been accepted for a cashminder account so will wait for the stuff to come through the post.
Glad I did it.

Thanks for the advice.Although I rarely post often tune in to see how folk are doing. Being in an IVA for 25 months has had its moments when I had to explain to a regulatory body my plight being the worst. No phone calls, letters or not sleeping worrying. Yes to making some poor life decisions and yes now to seeing that I may be better for the lessons learnt.
This place has helped.
All the best

Great news with the co-op Moose.

Well done on getting past the two year mark as well.

Hi

Norwich and Peterborough Building Society will offer a basic cash card account with cheque book they are Bankruptcy and IVA friendly for that account.

Coventry BS offer a money manager savings account with visa delta and interest but no cheque book.

Best of luck

However, Covenry BS is very limited as to where you can pay cash into. I don't know of any branches near to me at all and if I have a cheque to pay in, I want it done now, not have to post it and wait even longer.

I would have thought the same would be true of Norwich and Peterborough.

Another good one, which does have a lot of branches, is Yorkshire Building Society.

Hi,
I have a Natwest step account which we've have for about 3 yrs now and they are brilliant, it has the solo facility so you can use it virtually anywhere and putting money in is no problem either.
I have to say Natwest has been the best bank we have ever been with for customer service aswell as banking.
Hope this helps some.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I've been accepted by the Coventry B.S. for their call saver money-manager account, the account is now open and just waiting for my security details and Visa debitcard to arrive.

Certainly a good back up account if anything unexpected happens in the future what with banks merging/takeovers etc as it offers basic full banking facility's like direct debits/standing order payments except a cheque book and in my case...no nearby branches

One to put on the list for us 'IVA'ers I reckon especially those who have the co-op as creditors.

That is the problem I have with accounts like that - I need a local branch, or at least to be able to use the Post Office to pay things into. I frequently pay small amounts of cash in, and sometimes cheques which I need to be able to get access to as soon as possible.

My nearest branch is miles away, and the Norwich one is in Peterborough. Not very convenient.

They are great if you live near to a branch, but not so good otherwise.

Believe it or not, I don't have a Co-op local to me either - nearest branch is 12 miles away!

I'll stick with Nationwide, I'm quite happy with them and have a branch a mile away from me.

There are very few branches of the Co-op around, which could cause a problem with the Norwich and Peterborough. At least with the Co-op you can pay in cash and cheques at the Post Office.
