hi everyone , me again. Just trying to work out my budget for bankruptcy guidelines. Come to a section on pets. I have one cat, her insurance will i will be setting up any day is £10.52 a month (very steep) and she needs flea treatment every month. Its costs £15 for 3 months worth iof treatment. Is it reasonable do you think to have £5 a month for flea treatment. we have to get a good expensive treatment because when we were using bob martin flea treatment it did not work and we ended up having to pay out for house to be fumigated by the council. NOT FUN!!!

All I can tell you in my area the OR is very animal friendly - in a recent case he allowed a samaritan client to keep his two horses and insure them!. Hopefully your OR will be likeminded.

Hi Amy - you put down exactly what you spend and you can discuss it with the OR. We use frontline for our cats and buy them from the internet around £16 for 6.

The maximum allowance for pets in BR is £21.

Amy, did you shop around for your pet insurance? I've got Harry with Homebase for £6.99 a month.

And just to confirm the £21 is for all pets, not per pet.

I'm not sure Andy. I didn't have Harry when I first went bankrupt, and although I claimed for him when I had my IPA reviewed I don't think I was given an allowance for him.

Unfortunately I didn't ask for a breakdown of the figures so I'm not sure.

I have 2 cats and I did when we went bankrupt, the max allowance is £21 for both.

The insurance is £20 per month (that is our allowance gone) and we use our shopping budget to buy litter and cat food. and also have to save up for worming, fleaing, injections, etc

When I had my IPA reassessed £21 wouldn't have covered Harry's insurance and food - at that time his insurance was £13 a month and his food £13, plus his worming drops (I don't flea him) and anything else he needed.

I have two dogs and the insurance for those was put through no problem. It's just over £25 for both, but of course annual jabs cost on top of that. I don't worm them or de-flea them, 'cos they don't have either!

we pay £20 per month insurance, for both cats

£15 per month for a bag of James Wellbeloved dried food, which they have down all day to nibble on

£4 per box of Felix pouches, that is just a little treat for them and they share a pouch per day for breakfast and that box lasts about 2 weeks

litter, we now use Catsan at £5.50 per bag and that lasts 2 weeks

I lumped all this together for the OR at Cats=£54 per month and he just said " the max allowance you can have is £21 for your pets, so the rest you have to find from elsewhere"

ETA; also there is annual injections about £30 each and the worming and fleaing, they have a tablet at the vet every few months and and that is about £20-£30, they have to have these as they have been in the cattery a few times and they insist or they won't take them

Kennels never insist on it. The only thing you may have to do for those is a jab against kennel cough.

We feed ours on Chappie all in one dried food from our local pet shop, mixed with Butchers Tripe which we buy wholesale at Costco. They have biscuits, sea jerky and chocolate bones and scratchings.

Doesn't cost us a great deal at all.

I've never heard of a cattery insisting on a cat being fleaed or wormed - how would you prove it? I wouldn't take Harry to the vet to be fleaed or wormed - he has Profender drops on the back of his neck every 3 months.

We use Catsan cat litter and a 20litre bag lasts months as he hardly uses a litter try.

Your James Wellbeloved food sounds expensive Jane, I pay £12.49 and I sometimes order it from Pets at Home as they often have it 3 for 2. That's all Harry eats - he loved Felix but let's just say it didn't agree with him! I also don't like the idea of giving him Whiskas (if he'd eat it!) as it's full of rubbish - there's more meat in the James Wellbeloved dry food than there is in Whiskas or Felix.

Don't forget that you are allowed to retain some of your disposable income under bankruptcyu proceedings Amy, so if your pet expenses are more than is allowed you can always top up the difference from your own share.
