Hi KT and welcome to the forum, any form of credit is now allowed in an IVA without the express permission of your IP. A pre-pay card is often used for car hire, I don't know which ones are good as I don't really use one but do have the one that you get via 02 if you're an 02 customer.

Stay around and someone will come along and advise you on some good pre-pay cards whereby you load it with your money prior to using it x
IVA final payment left the bank on the 26th January 2013...looking forward to a debt free future.

I have a CashPlus Prepaid MasterCard. Works fine on the internet and in regular shops for shopping, but you do have to pay charges for using it (either set monthly fee or each time, depending on how regularly you think you will wish to use it.

With regards using for a hire car, I know CashPlus previously operated a system if you loaded the value of the hire onto the card and called them with the details, they would allow the transaction through (this understand was due to most prepaid cards not allowing this function when it came to hire cars). This may have changed more recently.

You won't be able to get a credit card, but a prepaid card is allowed. O2, Paypal are good ones.

Hmm the problem we have is the car hire was booked and paid for on a credit card before the IVA was even considered and since then the IVA was approved two weeks ago, however I have rung the car hire company and they wont let you drive the car away without a credit card being activated at the pick up and they definately dont accept pre paid cards. I was at the end of dispair yesterday and so applied on line for a credit card which I dont for one second believe we will get but have now had another sleepless night worried that we will get in trouble with the IP.. Do you think he will definately find out?

Do you need permission from the IP to get a pre paid card?

No you don't need permission as it is not credit.

I have no idea about this KT.

Hopefully one of the experts will pick up on this.

You certainly should not be applying for a credit card as this could jeopardise your whole IVA. If the car hire company require a credit card you may need to ask a friend or relative to allow theirs to be used or find out if the car hire firm will accept a cash deposit.

I cannot see any other way around this. Sorry.

Hi there,

I randomly applied for a credit card at the beginning of my IVA (don't know why, curiosity / stupidity probably) and was obviously declined. In my experience your IP won't know (as I doubt they're sitting there checking your credit file constantly). They'd only throw a fit if you actually obtained credit. So I would certainly not apply for anything else (there's just no point anyway as you won't get anything). I agree with Michael. The only way round this would be to borrow a card from friend / family or lay down cash. I've been in this situation and have always had to borrow my boyfriend's card.
Hope that helps.

Some hire companies (europcar or national) I think) do allow you to hire a car using a debit card to pay a deposit, I had to do this to hire a car for a funeral and there was no problem. Also I think cashplus are the only prepaid card that allow car hire, and this facility has to be activated, you can do this after a few months of card usage.

Hi
In the USA I was allowed to leave a 250 dollar deposit and a copy of my passport when hiring a car.
Do some research on the net.

Hi KT - depends on the car hire company but Hertz for example allow you to use a debit card in Ireland but if you do the whole excess would be taken out of your account when you took the car and then refunded to you after drop off - however this could be up to 1600 euros so pretty steep and not the sort of cash easily dolled out! However Hertz then allow you to purchase "super cover" locally which waivers the whole of the excess (its about 14 euros per day to get super cover depending on the car) so that might be an option your car hire firm could do for you - you are best to check with them direct if they have any way round this as each company and car hire location is different - good luck :o)

I've rented from Europcar recently and they accepted my Natwest solo card. Every where else required a credit card IN THE DRIVERS NAME before driving off. Europcar do not accept 02 VISA card either.
