Hi Guys

I have just found out that my brother has got some debt problems and was after some advice? Basically the story is….

My mum by mistake opened one of his letters yesterday and It was from a debt collector basically saying he has got 7 days to contact them or they will take legal action she went into a right panic and opened some more of his post to find more of theses letters!

He is no longer registered at our address so I have assured her that they cant take anything unless they can prove that it is his. But what are the options for my brother it is not a massive amount in total it is about £7000 after confronting him he has admitted he has been very depressed for the past couple of years not helped with the sudden death of our dad last year.

I am assuming a debt management plan would be the best for him, he earns a healthy amount so would be able to pay it off quite quickly but as it is at the point of legal action it is quite urgent, do you think the creditors would accept an offer I think it is over about 4 creditors with the majority of it to HSBC.

I know this is basic info but what do you think the options are would Melanies team deal with debts of this level?

Sorry to ramble! Any help would be greatly appreciated

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Sorry to hear of your brother's problems. Your mum and her address are quite safe though and they wouldn't come round and remove property anyway. Debt collectors can't even come over the threshold if you don't want to.

If he earns a decent amount, is he able to make the contractual payments? It may be that by speaking to the creditors he can get back on track again.

It does sound like a DMP would be a suitable option and most DMP companies work with creditors to keep costs and legal action to a minimum.

I do not think Melanie's team do DMPs but there is no harm in asking. However, Andy Davie has extensive knowledge of DMPs and may be worth asking for advice.

Andy is definately the one to contact here Sarah, and if I had a brother in debt I would happily recommend Mr Davie's services. Your brother will thank you for this in the long run when he gets sorted out.
