It should not show the industry in such a negative light though.
Andy - is there anything we can do to put this right?

Yes Jan of course this forum and other forums like it will continue to help people through the worst of times. When I came here in 2006 I was reassured and not alone any more.
The problem is will people bother to find help if they are informed that the industry cannot be trusted?
Anyway,I saw the programme and thought I would mention it here. I feel it's a shame not only for the industry but the people who are being battered by creditors, unaware of the possibilities and a long way from any answers.
And totally alone,
I kept my debt misery to myself for as long as I could.

Totally wrong the way things have been portrayed. I note that companies involved were not named.
I wonder why?

this programme was shown a few months ago on morning tv-looks like the producers at the BBC enjoy scaremongering.
Problem is many many more people will be suffering in silence now -in fear of seeking help.
Quite a dangerous choice of programme to show and will affect many lives.
full and final accepted January 2015
iva agreed; August 2010
iva would have completed; August 2017
extra year thank's to NRAM
I didn't see the programme but will be catching up on iPlayer. If anyone wants to comment, BBC may have a thread going on their website.
Sounds infuriating...if you get all the way through your paperwork and sign your proposal without realising there are fees, you deserve to be ripped off frankly.
You will have been informed about fees, and of course your fees are included in your monthly payments which wasn't made clear tonight at all.
Some people do sign up to things out of desperation but the moral of the story is that you should always read carefully before signing everything.

Desperation I totally understand, but if you're too lazy to read a contract lasting five years of your life you can't blame the IP. And I will be extremely annoyed if these no-hopers were supposed to represent people in debt. Please tell me they interviewed someone intelligent enough to enter their IVA having made an informed decision, having read the proposal and knowing fees are a bargain in comparison to interest and chargeS (particularly when it is the creditor paying the fees)!!!!
I would love to know who the company the electrian used - Andy, is there anyway you can find that out?
I do have to say though BOL that some people are so desperate to get out of their debt situation that they will sign up to anything that will get them out of debt. They are not as savvy as we are.

I disagree and feel that no one deserves to be ripped off. Desperate people who are being harassed by creditors to within an inch of sanity will and do sign a contract without fully understanding it. Some of the legal speak is fairly difficult to understand. The fees aside there are some companies who do rip people off as the programme did show. This is a one time event in most peoples lives, therefore one can only go on what is being told to them, legal speak or not, its not as though its a repeated experience (I bet there is at least one though, going through it twice or more).
Informed decisions are best made when the problem is shared and looked at with eyes open and a mind to judge. In my case I would have sold my right and left kidney, liver, pledged my life, given my soul to feel just to be in a position I could cope with. I was ashamed and alone, I did not know what I was doing and thank God I made it through.
Well said Lily! Nobody deserves to be ripped off, but of course we have only seen one side of the argument with the electrician - I'd like to know what company he used.
There are some companies who do rip people off and they should be named and shamed.

It was onesided - no companies were named that I saw and I think they all have been named and shamed.

BOL, I think that's a thoughtless post. Maybe the people who you call 'too lazy' were desperate and thought they had found a way out of their situation. You can call me lazy as well, as my IVA didn't work and I shouldn't never have signed it, but I was desperate and thought I'd found a way out.
And please don't refer to people as 'no hopers' - we don't know their full circumstances. While I think the electrician was unreasonable in complaining about the fees, we shouldn't forget the power of editing.
