The Co-op have a branch in Donegal Square,Belfast and good online banking. You can operate a Co-op account here in N Ireland. I think you can also use the Post Office when you bank with them but that might be just for business banking.

As Northern Ireland is part of the UK the cashminder account is available in Northern Ireland as I have helped a few customers in N.I. and they have had a cashminder accounts opened.

It won't rock the boat at all, you can apply for a new bank account. If you get accepted it will save you £20 a month!

However, you can only apply for a basic account over the phone or in a branch, not online.

I've recently opened a Co-op Cashminder Account over the phone in 10 minutes. I was very pleased that it was so straightforward when everything else isn't when you're in debt! I can confirm that you can use the post office for over the counter banking, which gives more options as the Co-op don't have many branches. Be prepared to answer the question about why you want a basic account, as they offered their current account, which I refused. I was asked about other accounts held and I told them I'd had an RBS current account for 15 years but was unhappy with service. I was also surprised to be told they would consult a credit ref agency, when I asked why, they said for identification verification. Hope this helps.

All banks and building societies have to identify their customers for legal reasons. This is done through an electronic identification verification check, which I believe is not the same as a full credit check.

I will definitely look into the Co op Cashminder account then, hubby got his no problem with Bank of Ireland but had to go into branch and I just don't want the embarassment of being turned down. All he has is a basic account with a hole in wall card.

I think ( though could be wrong) that it's a bit like the car insurance industries database and pulls together electronic records of basic ID and address details (like the online version of the electoral roll).
My opinions are merely that .. opinions based on experience. Always seek professional advice.

it is shown as a generic check on your credit file-ie confirming your details are correct-your actual credit file isnt checked.
full and final accepted January 2015

iva would have completed; August 2017
