I was advised to open a 'safe' bank account before I even started debt management/IVA, which I have done, and have been given a visa/debit card, not obviously a visa card, just a visa/debit, if I enter into an IVA will my new bank be aware and will this facilty be withdrawn?

Sorry for all these questions from a newbie, it's a scary if good thing to do but I have so many questions!

Which bank have you opened your account with? The Co-op is recommended.

As long as it is not HSBC or First Direct then you will be ok.

You'll be fine with Barclays. They were actually one of my creditors and I still have a full current account open with them.

wow thank you! That is such a relief, stupid stuff like I have a kindle (christmas present) and i was thinking I can't even pay for 99p books online if I don't have a visa debit, small pleasures and all that!

Plus as OH is disabled if I'm ever sick and can't get to supermarket I've had to order food online, can't do that with cash!

It's not my main account but I've had no problems.

I think most basic accounts have a debit card these days.

Sorry to hear that OH is disabled. My hubby has health problems as well. We have to grin and bear it don't we?

Hi ya, I have a full current account with Lloyds which I opened while setting up my iva and I haven't had any problems. Silly worries and all that...when I needed my card replacing (left it in a shop) i thought i would flash up on their system for a basic card but the visa was replaced (phew). x

Nationwide are good if you open your account pre IVA, not sure what they are like afterwards though.

I can vouch for Nationwide, opened a full account just
before my IVA was accepted. I even received a letter from them the other day advising my account now qualifies for free European Annual Travel Insurance....not that I'll be needing it, for the next few years anyway !!
