Evening all,
I've today found out I was successful in applying for a job at a new company and have just handed my resignation in at my current firm where I've been working for over 6 years. I have however, just seen on the contract from the new firm that I'm subject to certain checks such as employment history, qualifications and credit. The credit one surprised me as last time I took a job on there was no such thing.
I'm currently in a DMP as got in a right pickle over loans, credit cards etc.. and am 1 year away from paying it all off. I'm comfortable in my payments and feel now I'm well on my way to a better life debt free. I had all kinds of late payments etc.. literally dozens and I know my credit score right now is shot to bits.
The job is a systems role dealing with finance so I'm really panicking now. What should be a great day of me celebrating me a new job has now been overshadowed.
A part of me thinks I should just tell them tomorrow first thing. That way I should know for sure and I could probably (with my tail between my legs) tell my employer I'd still like my job should it be a problem.
Another part of me thinks I'm just being paranoid, they're only looking for bankruptcies and they won't even mention it. Or that they won't even bother with the check at all?
If anyone has any experience with this then please let me know. From research I can see in America this happens alot although I'm not sure how much over here, although the company is very much global.
Thanks in advance,
Jim

If it's in the financial sector then I'm afraid you may come unstuck. They have even been known to sack people already in post once they discover that you have debt problems.
Not right I know, but that's what they have done in the past.
We're willing to wipe the slate clean, give you a fresh start. All that we're asking in return is your cooperation.

My partner recently took a new job and we are in an IVA - I believe a number of checks were done, including a basic credit check - we held our breath and they still offered him the job (although it isn't dealing with Finance). As TheMatrix says, financial positions are often viewed differently and your credit status seems to become more relevant. I am still not sure if my husband's company became aware of his situation - he even got a corporate card (approved by IP) which is necessary for his role.
Maybe, in your situation, honesty might be the best policy, but, at any rate, there are people (experts) on here who are more than qualified to advise you so I would wait for a response from them as they are always really helpful
Congrats anyway on the job- in the current climate that's a great achievement!

Thanks for the replies. I'm edging towards telling them if I'm being honest. It's not like I'm in difficulty now, whilst I'm on a DMP the payments are enough to keep me more than above water and it's only for another year. But totally depends how they see it. I think my worst nightmare is starting the new role then a month in being asked to leave.
I think what I might do is speak to the agency who have sorted out my interviews etc.. they are obviously experts in recruitment and the guy I've been speaking to (who obviously wants me to get this job) may now a good plan of action. What a nightmare.
