thank you Melanie, it's a relief to hear that, I have started the ball rolling today by booking an estate agent to come around on Friday morning to do a valuation which I presume I need for the iva application.

That's a great start! You could also ring a couple of the firms listed on www.iva.com for free advice or speak to some of the professionals who post on here. Making that first call lifts a huge burden from your shoulders because you know there is someone fighting your corner!!

Let us know how you get on xx

Hi Louise - don't forget that bank account and stopping or reducing any payments you can no longer afford to pay if you decide an IVA is the route you wish to travel.

Hi Louise

by sounds of it my situation was quite similar to yours, I know it does seem scary at the moment but you are doing the right thing to get advice! I had equity in my house too and similar debt levels but did not have to sell my house as part of IVA. As you have your daughter living with you too, I think that would be very unlikely. I agree with others advice about bank accounts and make sure you consider all your options! If you are going to enter into some kind of debt plan then if you can't afford to keep up the payments you may as well stop now, your credit rating will be damaged afterwards anyway. The phone calls didn't last that long I didn't think - just be firm with them! If they ring you at work just tell them if they keep ringing you will get the sack and have no money to offer!! Good luck x

hi kazza, yes I am going to try to open a co-op account on Friday and will also ring one of the iva companies on here. will have to cancel the dd's for the cc payments if I am to cope without using my card anymore but cutting it in half will be such a positive step that I can cope with the inevitable phone calls etc. the positive advice I received here last night was such a tonic as I was so scared to take the first steps towards the iva. I had been trying to work out different ways of paying the debt but short of moving into a caravan and renting out my house I could'nt really see how i could realistically do it.
I know I am not there yet but slept so much better last night, even through my alarm so thank you, everyone[:)]

The forum has been a great help to me and I know it will be the same for you too. As soon as you get the account number get your wages and other income transferred over. Really to me that was the most important thing. We had a large authorised overdraft at our old bank and had my wages gone in it would have been swallowed up into clearing the o/d. I tell you, the sense of relief when IVA approved is amazing. I always knew it was bothering me but had no idea how much.
