I like to do my own budgetting and would probably prefer a set amount fee for a bank account.
IVA final payment left the bank on the 26th January 2013...looking forward to a debt free future.

If they do charge, it will probably be a monthly fee and I shall try and get this factored into the IVA if it comes in before we finish.

Trouble is though BOL - you might be struggling to get another account while in the IVA.

I guess and I wouldn't give up my current account for a basic one. It's all hypothetical at the mo but apparently George O is giving his speech about taxing financial services on Tuesday so shouldn't be too long before we know. Bless his cotton socks - he was on Andrew Marr this morning saying about how banks need to share in the pain of recovery. He must know they'll pass on the cost and add in a tidy profit...passing on more pain to the people he's trying to help.

I see they are talking about underwriting loans for business to boost the economy - perhaps we should all become business owners!!!

They need to help small businesses before more go to the wall, resulting in more unemployment.

They also need to help the self employed more as it's harder to prove you don't have work if you are self employed and therefore harder to claim anything when you need it.

Hi all, we had a step account too, but when we got the letter saying it was changing, we were allowed to upgrade to their select account which you can have for free or for £8 a month (select silver) with travel insurance and other stuff. We said that paying £8 a month for stuff we didn't need would mean that we were paying £8.00 to use other banks cash machines! Anyway, we were upgraded straight away. I told the advisor that we were in IVA's and that we didn't want to be credit checked, and they said as there wasn't any credit facility there wouldn't be a check. It took 5 minutes and our account was changed and we kept the same account and sort number. It was hassle free, and we can use our new debit cards where ever we like. I would recommend calling them to change over.
I tired to upgrade my account with them but was refused after they did a credit check. I did not even get a letter to say it was changing. Only found out thanks to forum. 3 mile walk to nearest cash point. ! Anybody got any ideas how I can change banks

Co-op are...err...co-operative with people in ivas. Otherwise you could try for a basic account with whoever has a convenient branch or cashpoint.

Mystery solved! I have a NatWest step account and have only just seen this thread, explains why I suddenly am unable to use many cash machines I have used before. As I've not started an IVA yet I might be able to upgrade to a better account, they always ask me to when I go in a branch so might as well. I have no credit with NatWest so I am hoping I will be able to continue with them into an IVA

Hi Lee - make sure you do not get an overdraft facility with the account though as that will have to go when you are in your IVA so best get the right account sorted now.

Natwest really should have written to everyone explaining the changes if they haven't, so that customers like yourself are not left wondering what on earth is going on!

They did write to me and at the minute it hasn't affected me but I'm sure a time will come when it does. I used to be so positive about Natwest but even out local branch now only has two tills and so the queue has increased too. x

All the banks seem to get a little worse as time goes on. I got a letter on 22 Oct telling me I would be overdrawn on 24 Oct because a payment had been requested and i would be charged £5 a day... But I was being paid on 24 Oct too so the credit and debit would cross over!! I was so annoyed they marked me as overdrawn when I wasn't actually overdrawn at any point!!
