Hi, I'm hoping to go to university full time in September. Along with bursary, grant and student loans I will also be working very flexible part time hours. Obviously, this work won't give me the kind of wage I get now (which is still quite poor). Does anybody know if bursary etc is included in my "income" calculation? I'm confident I will be no worse off financially (fingers crossed)....many thanks

A bursary will be included as income. What you planning to study?

Hi Paul

Many thanks.....I will be studying Occupational Therapy (got my offer a few weeks ago). My main issue now is ensuring I don't put myself in a worse situation financially, as I don't want to, or rather can't mess the IVA up.

Thanks again
Dawn

Hi Melanie

Sorry for the delay....just home from college.

Yes I'm in an IVA. By the time September comes around I will have been in it for 15 months.

Thanks
Dawn

Hay Dawn

Firstly congrats on getting the offer! what ever it takes do go and complete the 3 years, i did mental health nursing some years ago and so glad i gained a clinical qualification to always fall back on! Even though I don’t work in a clinical environment anymore I know should the worst in the NHS happen (and its gonna!![:(]) I will always find work!

It can be difficult over the 3 years to ensure you still do make the money you need to ensure your IVA continues, some months you may go a little short other you may have an opportunity to do loads of bank work and actually earn much more than you are now, usually depending on placements, when your in uni, holiday etc even when on placement often you will be asked to work in the placement area, what I found difficult was the regularity of this. For example during my second year I was worried I wouldn’t earn enough to keep going so I wouldn’t turn down any bank shifts, I ended up working almost every day for 4 months until exhaustion kicked in!

Are the tuition fees still picked up by the NHS or will you be responsibly for them once you qualify and get a job?

Much luck for the future and if I was you I’d be grabbing this opportunity with both hands [:D]

Hi Arty

Many thanks for your encouragement,it means a lot. I think this opportunity has came at a time in my life where nothing will hold me back. Basically I left school many years ago with not a qualification to my name and after being made redundant 2 years ago, like everybody else I struggled to find work.

I'm now in a poorly paid job (hence the IVA) and after a really bad day rang my local college, almost in tears and physically shaking and told them what I wanted to do. I completed level 2 maths and english, which got me on the access to HE diploma course and now I've got my Uni offer...... I'm not going to waste this opportunity, no way.

And you're right, if I can get bank work under my belt I'm confident I can do this. In fact, 2 nightshifts on bank would give me more money than I earn now for a 40 hour week.....madness!

And yes the NHS still find the course and boy I'm I grateful for that.

Many thanks
Dawn
