I have been told that final distributions have now been made to my creditors, does anyone know what happens now and how long until I receive my certificate of completion

If final distributions have been made, then your closure report should be in the post with the Certificate of Due Completion one would have thought. Give your IP a ring on Monday to see how things currently stand.
I have been told that final distributions have now been made to my creditors and my certificate of completion won't be sent out until end of August or beginning of September why is it not sent out straight away? Is this normal practice?

Maybe they wait until that last payments to creditors has been received and cashed / cleared as some may be cheques and take longer to ensure the bank account maintained by your IP on your behalf is zero.
Last Payment - November 2011 - Completion Certificate received 2 weeks after last payment, Removed from Insolvency Register within 4 weeks after last payment.
