Fair point, TA -- an example of where discretion is not being used in the spirit in which it was granted.

TheArtist, the way you were treated your IVA firm- IP was disgraceful. You seem to get some people on this forum more than willing to defend or at least gloss over such abberations which raises the question, what is their motive?

Foggy you still dont get it do you, preying on vulnerable people in the guise of helping them is totally unexceptable and needs to be stamped out and those found to be breaking the law to be held accountable. Agreed there are good and bad in the industry but surely shouldn't the latter be weeded out? Also try and do a little more research on Claims companies, IVA provders and IP's links.

As for "tirades" and past comments on the forum, i seem to recall i am not the only one who has apologized over heated posts. Can you think of anyone else?

debt tired. Yes people do need to make a living , i have several members of my family and friends working in the NHS and other areas of healthcare ask only this, who is the better paid,? who is more valued? who is the most essential, who is the most dedicated, an IP or a trained nurse. i am sure it wont take you very long to make up your mind.

lamfubb I'm sorry that you seem to have had a hard time but I have to disagree with you. I admit we didn't do the research that we should have done but were in such a state of panic that we went with the first company we came across. Fortunately so far it has worked OK. Times have been hard and sometimes it has seemed a never ending tunnel but without the iva I dread to think how long we would have been paying our debts for. Maybe even going BR and losing our home. Our son has delayed going to university for 2 years so that we could finish and be able to cope. Neither of our sons have been able to learn to drive or do many of the things that their friends have because we couldn't afford it but even so it has been worthwhile.
Life after IVA is wonderful.

Yes, Iamfubb, I, too, have had cause to apologise, there is no need to make oblique references to this. I was merely trying to find out what had upset you so much this time.

No, iamfubb YOU are not getting it! You agree there are good and bad in the industry, yet slam ALL IVA's, tarring the good with the bad. The latter to which you refer WILL be weeded out when people talk about the way they are being handled by their firms on forums such as this.

As for your final paragraph, it is irrelevant, and, frankly, insulting to those in the insolvency industry who DO care and who DO take pride in their work. As to who is most essential, it all depends upon the circumstances at the time. I wouldn't want an IP taking out my appendix, nor would I want a doctor dealing with my financial mess !!

You choose to compare an IP to a nurse --- on the other side of the coin, let's compare an IP to a top earning professional footballer .......

iamfubb, my son works in the NHS, often saving lives. If our IP (Melanie) can sort out our debt troubles, she will probably have saved my husband's life as he has been suicidal in the past and was getting very close to that situation again, until in desperation I began some research and found out about IVAs. I would have paid anything to get his health and sanity back.

Foggy, wasn't it you who raised the subject of past apologies and, compared the NHS to IP's and their companies in an earlier post? Pot and kettle? I am not upset at all is the answer to your question, just raising a few points on issues that seem to get pushed aside or in some cases totally ignored on here. You seem to cherrypick which points to answer in my questions. I have no intention of insulting anyone doing their job properly, and in an honest and open way. What i do object to is people in genuine need of help and guidance being mis-served by so some so called "experts" and IVA companies being in the game just for their own personal gain and standing.

As for the "weeding out" why not have a name and shame section on this site. I am pretty sure it would make quite a few people concentrate a little more on clients rather than the "bottom line"

Are there any representatives of companies who contribute to this site wiling to shoot me down and flatly deny that they have any professional or financial links to PPI claims firms?. It seems such a muddled issue that needs a clear and precise answer. Alternatively if IVA firms do have interests with the PPI recovery business why dont they take the chance of explaining their links and M O on this forum, and clarify the issue once and for all.

iamfubb2, i dont think is fair to suggest that everyone who wants an IVA should not, as per your OP, Your tone to now "selected companies" is more about what this forum is about, yes and everyone can name and shame if they so wish to, it is an open forum after all and I dont recal seeing admin ever delete such negative posts, I thinks it is also very important as you have stated that "some" are not as good as others but the picture your providing is not true and acurate in my experience with My IVA. You point about who who might be good and who might not be can be seen in posts for those that have named and shamed on this forum, a simple search would find these. There is always some posted on here that in most cases say "please speak to at least 3 or 4 companies, and take a look at this link http://www.iva.com/ "
Looking at the link can give a picture on feedback for the companies and the IP's so people can see who is better than others, I am sorry you have not had a great journey with your IVA but please dont suggest that it is not a solution for "anyone" as I and some others do not agree from experience.
Took The plunge and made the call, changed our family life and we have never been happier. Debt free and wont go back..... IVA was by far the best thing we ever did to teach us the real value of Family and money

Foggy, wasn't it you who raised the subject of past apologies Yes, only by way of mentioning the last time you raised issues and wondering why, after a long spell of silence you suddenly launch off again and was curious to know why and, compared the NHS to IP's and their companies Er .. No.. I merely mentioned that my dentist charges £17 for a 5 second x-ray -- I could just as easily mentioned the local Halfords charging £2.99 to change a bulb! in an earlier post? Pot and kettle? I'll be the pot ( I have the figure for it -- you be the kettle I am not upset at all is the answer to your question, just raising a few points on issues that seem to get pushed aside or in some cases totally ignored on here Hmmm -- I think these issues are raided quite regularly,in a calm and cool manner and generally addressed. You seem to cherrypick which points to answer in my questions. Sorry -- what have I missed ? I have no intention of insulting anyone doing their job properly, and in an honest and open way. What i do object to is people in genuine need of help and guidance being mis-served by so some so called "experts" and IVA companies being in the game just for their own personal gain and standing.I agree --- but, as I said before, please do not tar all with the same brush, and a blanket "Do not enter an IVA" is far from helpful advice.

As for the "weeding out" why not have a name and shame section on this site. Oh, we do name and shame where warranted. I am pretty sure it would make quite a few people concentrate a little more on clients rather than the "bottom line" I hope it does -- am 100% with you there.

It seems such a muddled issue that needs a clear and precise answer. Good question -- will be happy to see a response.

I made the final payment into my IVA last august and although I'm still awaiting my completion certificate, I have to say the best thing i did was go into an IVA.

I was in what felt like meltdown in 2007.

Yes an IVA is tough but now I've come out the other side and for me its been worth all of the sacrifices.

I had my car breakdown several times and a few other emergencies along the way but my IVA company have been very good so I can't advise against anybody entering an IVA.

However I do agree people should think carefully and not take the decision lightly or without the facts.

Well..have to say I agree with both sides of this debate. My first iva was rubbish. Waste of 3 years of our lives. 2nd iva good at first, break down in communication within our company resulted in the most stressful time of our lives. Glad to see the back of it within a year. On that note 2nd iva was right for us whether it was a nightmare or not. Its an individual choice I guess :) yes they do make money out of us but having the right company and an ip who knows what they are doing helps. Would shop around if I could take my time back.

Chezza and Gina make good points. An IVA is a life changing thing to undertake and must never be taken lightly. And, yes, sometimes things go spectacularly wrong ( don't they in all walks of life?). But, for the majority, they do work.

The key is finding the right company and communication both ways ( some IPs have yet to grasp the concept I admit). Above all -- work WITH your IP, even if you have to kick up a fuss to make them listen. It is YOUR IVA.

Just a little example of some of the issues I'm having.

I have for months been sending GT e-mails, numerous phone calls and still no reply to the latest e-mails below.

Again no response from Grant Thornton to this e-mail dated 26 December 2012

Why ?

Could Grant Thornton please explain to me why my supervisory charges jump from £6,188.00 as stated on original proposal document (I will gladly send you a copy should you require it) to a staggering £18,170.00 ?

I have repeatedly sent you the required information of Barclaycard PPI claims that have been offset against our debt with Barclaycard, yet again Grant Thornton claim they have not received it.

The only bit of advice I can give you on this is save all your emails and send everything recorded and scan / copy everything sent. If you get no joy from grant thornton or your ip after numurous tries ( which you already seem to have done) go down the complaints route .You tend to get more response. Hang in there and remember you wouldn't take bad service from tesco for example so don't from your ip. Hope you get a response and explaination

Jeffw -- I echo Gina's advice about scanning and emailing documents -- that's the way I deal with my paperwork. I also always ask for confirmation of receipt (which, so far has been forthcoming).

I scan for a couple of reasons: It's fast, if they claim non-receipt it can be sent again easily and you always have a copy -- OK ... that's three --- oh, and I don't trust Royal Mail!
