Hi everybody, just wondering if anybody has ever been able to hire a car in an IVA?

Ive been looking through the T&C's and it looks like they always require a credit card which we do not have!!!!!

Just wondered if anybody has used a debit card as a deposit?

Thanks

Baldy

Hi. I hired a car from Enterprise during my IVA and they accepted my debit card ... it might have been a clerical error, but I wasn't going to question it !

When you hire a car they often do a pre-auth on your card for a deposit, been a long time since I done it but think it may have been as high as £800

If you have a credit card with plenty of headroom it makes little difference, with a debit card it'd be £800 of your money you can't spend until the cars back and the pre-auth drops

As martinw says a pre-auth will take a chunk for a while and some companies take a few weeks to take this off, so always best to check.

That said, there couldn't have been much of a pre-auth on mine as there was never that amount there in the first place ( My salary went on one day and the majority of my DDs went out the day after!).

I hired a car last year whilst in the iva and used a personal paid credit card which worked fine.

I think using the extra insurance offered by car rental firms drops the pre-auth quite a lot (maybe to 0). The downside with this is that it's expensive compared to third party providers of equivalent insurance

That might be the case with my hire, martinw, as I took their insurance.

The pre-paid credit cards are a good idea, and ALWAYS get the collision damage waiver, for the 3 quid, or whatever a day it means you can pitch back up and just give them the key back and say sorry about the car, its at the bottom of a ravine, and oh, it might have caught fire.

They will just ask if you are ok, and wish you a pleasant onward journey.

I've had good results with Hertz and Enterprise (Enterprise definately let you use debit cards)

I've hired numerous times while in my IVA from Enterprise, the last time being just last month. They accept a debit card as long as it's in your name. Think Thrifty also take debit cards
Last payment October 2013

Hey everybody, many thanks for your replys.
Might have a look at Enterprise when the time comes.
We need to do a long trip over the next bank holiday and wanted to try and keep the milage down on the cars with two years still to go!

Also might be wort looking to see if you have any local, independant car hire places.

We have one around us that has a half dozen cars to hire as part of their larger van hire and garage services. The car hire is cheaper than the nationals, you pay a £50 cash deposit and £8 per day to reduce the damage excess to £0. The only difference is the cars are a couple of years older.

We have hired a car through enterprise no problem just take a copy of debit card, no hassle and no restrictions on bank account funds.
