Afternoon, I have just entered an IVA and have one child at Uni (starts yr3 in Sept 2014). Because of household income he only gets £4k Maint loan which pays for his rent so we give him a living allowance. 2nd child will be starting Uni in 2015, what student fiance will he get as my IVA takes all the spare cash I have ? Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to this but may be worth asking student finance england and failing that maybe ask at university if there are any bursary payments available.
IVA final payment left the bank on the 26th January 2013...looking forward to a debt free future.

Won't you be able to use some of the money you will be saving by not supporting your elder child, to contribute to the younger one's costs?

Hi, unfortunately Student Finance is based on your household income NOT disposable income so the fact that you are in an IVA will have no bearing on your child's Student Finance application. We have a daughter at Uni (she is going into her 3rd year in September) and some allowance for her "upkeep" was included in the household/food allowance in our IVA's as she lives at home for a third of the year due to holidays/summer so that obviously impacts on our disposable income. As Melanie said, by the time your second child starts uni, your first one will have finished so hopefully you will be able to carry on paying a living allowance to the second one - there is always something to pay out, isn't there? Good luck.

assuming it's a 3 year course then the above posts would be a way forward. My daughters is a 4 year course as she is completing a PGCE at the end subject specific and I know a lot of her friend completed a foundation year prior to their degree.

We have had a child at university for the last three years and she was only allowed the minim student allowance due to our income and she was removed from our I and e by our iva company and we're told she should be self sufficient over 18 even though still at home. It is a tough one but we really struggled to ensure she was able to go to uni and not be punished for our mistakes. She graduates on Tuesday so it has been worth it xxxxx

Creditors who do not allow parents to support children in further education need to look very closely at their "Treating Customers Fairly" policies. And IPs should not allow their clients to be rolled over in this regard - I have successfully fought for further education support to be included in a number of my own cases where the reasons can be justified.
