Will council housing be a problem with an IVA? Since my IVA went through four months ago I have been renting privately but now I need to look elsewhere. As my IVA is only just started, will my credit record stop me getting on the local authority lists? I appreciate that these lists are long and I shall have to go with other options in the short term, which I am prepared to do, but will my IVA be a problem getting on the lists?

I don't think your IVA will be a problem for council house renting. I think they will put you on the list.

Hello from me!
I doubt it, Our local Council does not do credit checks on clients - they are usually more bothered about getting respectable paying tenants in.
The amount of time it takes for you to get a Council property will depend on what you want. Single occupancy accommodation is easier to get than one to accommodate a family.
We have been on our local Council List for over 7 years - but family accommodation is rare has people hardly ever move out of them - once they get in. Which is what would happen with us if we ever got one. We have actually given up hope in getting one.
You can also try looking up Housing Associations - some rent properties but its the same problem as the Council, it depends what size of accommodation you require.
The housing Associations are usually happy with previous landlord/employment references. We also have our names down with a few & had no luck. If all else fails - try going for private landlord lettings, the way property market is going there seems to be plenty of to let signs appearing these days. You could always show a up to date rent book & get a character reference from a present/previous employer.
Good luck with house hunting
Final IVA payment made in April 2013, never ever thought we could do it or get through it but we did! X

the problem with council housing and housing associations at the moment is the demand for them.

the waiting lists are very long and growing at a great rate especially with the situation at the moment.

you need to fit certain criterea, one tat may help is if you or your partner work in a different borough to where you live at the moment tnis will give you extra points with moving due to work.

Hi All

We do not have a points based system any more. Our social housing organisation switched to choice based lettings and a great many people prefer it as it gives far more transparency to the allocations process. Check it out go to www.wdh.co.uk and look for choice based lettings. Not sure what part of the country you are in or if moving is an option for you. The system as far asd I know is adopted by other housing providers also.

Or google choice based lettings for info on how it works.

Good luck

John

I should not think it would be a problem at all, we were bankrupt and had left our house to be repossessed and we got a council house. We were honest about it but they were not bothered in the slightest. We were on the list 18 months, in the end I wrote them a letter putting our case across as more urgent and we got another visit and were awarded some extra points for medical reasons and 2 days later we got this lovely 3 bed semi, and I agree, there is no way on earth I am moving out of here, when we die, the tenancy will pass on to our eldest child [:D] We know we have been VERY lucky indeed to get this house, its in a very sought-after area too
