One way to check what a company has on you is to submit a "Subject Access Request".

I can see where you are coming from here though, but if they were to do that they would be breaking a number of data protection principles copied below for reference. The data would be inacurate, not kept up to date and would have been kept for longer than is necessary. Additionally the data would have been "further processed".

The principles affected here as I see it are...

Principle 2: "Personal data shall be obtained only for one or more specified and lawful purposes, and shall not be further processed in any manner incompatible with that purpose or those purposes."

Principle 4: "Personal data shall be accurate and, where necessary, kept up to date."

Principle 5: "Personal data processed for any purpose or purposes shall not be kept for longer than is necessary for that purpose or those purposes."

Is this how the companies offering bankruptcy assist get their data as it'd all be there in one easy to read format ready to mailmerge?

Probably, I cannot imagine them going through one by one.

Be far too time consuming and for such a small fee which they'd recoup via just one person using their services it seems feasible.

Agreed, a simple mail merge and you can mail out thousands.

What they'd save on paying someone to physically go through one at a time, they'd make back from a subscription.

Abolish it I say, or at least restrict it to those who really need the information for lawful purposes.

We've tried to get it restricted - Andy did a petition a couple of years ago to no avail.

I couldn't agree more that a need to know basis with a fee would make me a lot happier for one.

Perhaps Andy would like to try another one? Hopefully he can pick up on this.

That information has been available for public purchase for a number of years now and is where all of the "bankruptcy assist" companies get their data from.

Once you have completed your IVA and the IP has informed the Insolvency Service then your name comes off the public register.
