Where I work Paul that only counts for part of it - you have a structured interview and scored for the way you answer the questions. You might be the best person for the job and look wonderful but if you don't answer correctly, then bad luck!

Same where I am Jan. We recently interviewed two people and we didn't give the job to the one who was best qualified for the job as she didn't come across as well in her interview.
We interviewed somebody a couple of years ago who was totally perfect - she visited the office as well and would have fitted in perfectly. She was already doing the job but because she didn't come over too well at interview she didn't get the job.
The one who eventually did lasted less than twelve months and was always late!!

The one we interviewed who would have been better at the job came across as pushy in the interview - she even said people call her bossy! We're such a small team that it would have upset things too much.
Some people are just poor at interviews and thats a pity that so many firms use a scored interview to find the best candidate!! I know our work just now relies heavily on interview.

Ours will never do that - doesn't matter how good you are at the job.

Nowadays with jobs, I honestly think that it is a case of "Who you know" not "What you know", especially in the public sector from what I have seen over the years. Nepotism (spelling?) at it's best.
Sometimes that is the case but with my works it was someone who had never worked for the police before and should never have had the job who managed to get through the interview and he was rubbish!
