Does anyone know anything about Mercers Debt Collections Limited who so say act on behalf of Barclaycard? They have a head office in London registerd with Company House but no other branches listed. My letter came from a branch in Liverpool. Are they legal?

They are quite persistant unfortunatly.
They threaten door stop collectors but i doubt if they would turn up as it would cost them too much esepcially as you are addressing the debt problem with an IVA.
They can hold your account to stop the calls and they have done that for me, but i had an instance on Saturday whereby i spoke to one of their agents and made a token payment of £5.00 and was told the account was held and then a few hours later they called again.
I have 4 cards which come under Barclays so have had a fair amount of correspondance!!

What I'm getting at here is are they legal. They are not registered as a branch of Mercer's head office in London.
I've been on the phone with them twice this morning, questioning their legality. I suggest you all do the same. At the moment I am still awaiting a call from their Director Mr Michael Chi Liu maybe he will answer my question.

Oh i see.
Surely though a bank like Barclays would have to use a reputable company.
Let us know the outcome.
Thanks

Mercers are part of Barclaycard and share the same building as their recovery team. They are their debt collectors. They have a reputation of being quite aggressive when trying to recover monies owed.

Could I suggest you all call this number if you have a spare five minutes, and ask why they are not registerd at company house as a legitimate company. Give them a taste of their own medicine.. Also ask for a reply from their company director Mr Michael Chi Liu.

*I have deleted the number as it is not necessary to put that on here.

Hi there

Just wondering why you think its not legal, do the debt's quoted tally with what you owe? Mercers are a debt collection company most of us have heard of, related to barclaycard.

I also cannot understand the point of phoning them. Could you please clarify?

In a nutshell. If they are not a properly registered company they should not be contacting anyone on Barclays behalf and Barclays shouldn't be using them. Nobody should be giving them any details about themselves either when they ask security quetions.

I don't know about the ligitimacy of the company, but can say they are very aggressive in pushing for payment and are very rude with it.
I did not question their methods as I had lots of creditors trying to get payment, but did find Mercers one of the worst.

I would assume a company of that size is all above board and ligitimate, don't know though as I never looked that deep into things.

They are acting under the authority of Barclays, and therefore this gives them the right to contact customers of that bank. They do not need limited liability status to be able to do that!

Just to add, whenever they phoned me, it would be from a Liverpool call centre and you have provided a Liverpool phone number, so I think that it is them.

Yes, it's always a Liverpool number. They frequently leave messages for you to phone them back as well. I never did.

There would be no point in anyone in an IVA, DMP or BR phoning them anyway, and I really don't know why you would want to.

I never want to speak to them again!

They have been hassling me for ages. Phoning at all ours every day, even to my old work numbers when they have been told I no longer work there. They rejected the offer through the DMP and they keep trying to get me ti up the offer. I'm not going to do this as it'll mean that others may start demanding more, and I'd give them preferential treatment. they keep putting my account on holdfor a couple of days, then stating I'll face doorstep collections. I just can't see what they are not understading I will not give them what they wantad treat them differently. It's seems its going round in circles.

They are a nuisance and won't give up. They will probably sell the debt on soon, usually to Max Recovery and you will find that they will usually accept your payment.

Just keep sending them the DMP payment and tell them there is no more. They will threaten you with debt collectors but they very rarely turn up. If they do, just be polite, tell them there's no money and shut the door. You do not have to invite them in and you do not have to pay them anything.
