Not sure if anyone will know on here or this is the right place to post it but something dawned on me earlier today while filling up at Asda Pre-Pay Petrol Station.
I frequesntly go to Asda to pay for my petrol and I often use the Pay at Pump Option with my debit Card. Now, I went down today and stuck my card in and got authorised with pin and took my card out. It then said you can fill upto 70 Pounds, so I started to fill up.
Then I relised I had taken cash out of my bank earlier in the day and might have less money in ther than I thought, by now I had stuck £20 in, so I immediately stopped and thought what if i have put more in than was in my bank. I slowly put the pump back and waited and the receipt came out fine. I then quickly got in my car and drove off.
When I got home, I realised I now only had £12 available in my bank, so was close.
But does anyone know how these work, as if I had of gone and filled uo to £40, would it have rejected me or would it have taken accepted the transaction and then overdrawn me as the fuel was in and card was already in my pocket.
I think it would probably have carried on and made you overdrawn.

i work at asda it would take the money from your account and make you overdrawn your bank will then charge you for been overdrawn if you don't have an over draft
Since being in my IVA, I have made sure not to go overdrawn or miss payments and have budgeted really well, the last thing I want to do, is ruin that by going overdrawn by a few quid on something as stupid as petrol which I could have controlled
Cheers aswell S2004, that clears things up, was even afraid if didnt overdraw me, might reject my payment and have the petrol station syphon the petrol back in front of everyone
if you go put the £8 in bank in morning you might get away with it if you only have the £12 in bank because it might take asda 48 hours before it comes out of your account
What I meant was when i got back, my Balance was still £32 pound but available had gone down to £12, so i was ok as stopped in time, but I was planning on putting £40 pound in and would of gone overdrawn then
If you were using a Pre-Paid Debit card then it should not have happened. All pre-paid debit cards cannot go overdrawn. If your debit card is with your own bank and they allowed your account to eceed your facilities you would have been penalised with hefty charges.

You will find that most - if not all prepaid debit/credit cards do not work at prepay petrol stations.
since i started my iva i keep a book of all money i take out of my account i know how much to the penny is in my account.
Even though i have completed my iva i still keep a log.
It feels very weird now, no debts to pa, no IVA, its been the norm for so long to worry about debts and IVA it now feels not normal to have any.
My partner as never had any debts and even though shes the better person for not having debts she can not beleive how good i am at budgeting and carefull with money.
David, i think irish ram was referring to them machines on the petrol pumps, where you can pay at the pump with a normal debit card instead of going in.
Ah. Got it. The clearcash pre-paid Visa debit card works at petrol pumps - I've tried it and it works!

Hi
Going back to the original question some transactions will take three days to debit, so if you find yourself in this position you can pay cash over the counter at your bank and save yourself from going overdrawn.
