I received my certificate of completion last week and now have to contact credit reference agencies to ensure my file is updated. Do I have to open accounts with Experian etc to do this? Thank you

My understanding is that the IP informs the Insolvency Service who then report to the credit reference agencies -- this is what happened in my case and, I assume, most others. To contact the CRA's you do not need to open accouints with them -- they have contact details an email links on their websites.
My opinions are merely that .. opinions based on experience. Always seek professional advice.

It should all update from when the IP notifies them of your completion.
Also you can access the free credit reference agencies like Noddle and Clearscore. If you need further services, you can register and pay monthly subscriptions to others.
Noddle and Clearscore are free - you just sign up to them online.
