Hi everyone,
I posted some time ago that First direct(HSBC)were closing my account because I am in an IVA,as a result of reading other postings I was one step ahead and applied for a Flexaccount with Nationwide and an Easycash account with the Halifax also a basic account with the Cooperative bank.I sent off all the details to each bank and was accepted straight away by Nationwide, declined by Halifax due to credit search results(I only applied for the basic account-no credit products)and have heared nothing from the Coop after 2 months.I thought that was that, so, I transferred salary,D.Debits etc.last week to my Nationwide account.Yesterday I received a letter from the Halifax asking for more ID,I planned to ignore it and carry on with Nationwide, then today I received another letter with a welcome pack from the Halifax I was confused so I rang them and they checked everything and I was told that the application had gone to an appeal and was succesful and my account was now open.I did not lodge an appeal myself so the bank must have?????,strange, is this common practice I wonder. After some thought I have decided to keep both accounts and run Nationwide as the main account and transfer spending money to the Halifax which offers a debit card facility. Then I haven't got all my "eggs in one basket"
So anyone out there having problems switching accounts don't give up
someone loves you....

Many of my clients have found that the Nationwide are very easy to do business with and I would reccomend the Flex Account to anyone who does not have Nationwide as a creditor.

I beleive that your experiences with Halifax are due to the fact that many of the banks have automated account vetting systems now which means the computer will often decline you straight away for bad credit even on basic accounts. The bank can then usually ask their own underwriters to make a decision on the account through an appeal.

I applied for the same Nationwide and Halifax accounts and also run the Nationwide as my direct debit account and the halifax as my day to day account. I think it helps having 2 accounts just in case, because you never know who may adopt HSBCs approach to IVAs. I don't know where they get their customer service ideas from but seem determined to alienate as many people as possible at the moment.

Hello

Mark I would highly reccomend that you visit the branch personally and make an appointment to see someone. Be up front and honest about your situation. If you try and open an account over the internet it is likely that you will be vetted out by the computer when it credit scores you (see my earlier post).

Hi
I,m sure that there are two types of Nationwide flex account, one offering a basic account with ID checks only and the other one offering a bit more but with credit checks.
May be a forum member can confirm this.

There are 2 Nationwide accounts called Flex accounts, one is a current account with Debit card cheque book etc, the other is a basic account with a bank card only.

Thanks for that Louiseh, that seems to make sense as to why some people find it easy to get an account and some not
