I have left uk with debt, ( i am travelling and have NO income and no way of repaying atm) But have now been advised that they are sending my ex landlord bailiff letters. What can they do? Can they take their things? Do they look for people abroad, or what is the procedure. I am too scared to calling them, but what do you advise??? I owe 2500 pounds to a collections agency now. I would like to pay but have limited money. Help me, i feel awful

Hi Suk, I think you should contact these people, as things will only get worse. You should be honest about your situation, and see what they say. I don't really know what they can do, but i don't think the baliffs can take things from a house if proven not to be yours. How long are you planning to be away? I always think that thinks will catch up with you in the end and be 10x worse, so maybe you should confront the issue now. Good luck x

Hi Suk,
You must be going out of your head with worry.
Sorry I can't give any advice, but there are excellent experts on here who will be able to so keep posting and someone will be along soon to help. One thing I can say though is that facing up to the problem is the hardest part, which you will need to do at some point. Running away from it will only make things worse in the long run. I notice from a post you made in May you had a debt of 14000 and bankruptcy was put forward as an option for you. Do you mean you now owe 25000? List a few more details and someone will be along to offer some help and advice soon. Good luck and keep posting, this is an excellent forum and you will get loads of help, advice and support.
All the best
Mike

Hi
Bailiffs can't take items that belong to someone else.
I would contact the company and state that when you return to the UK you are going to petition or bankruptcy[£485].
I suggest that you do this, assuming that your debts are 14k or more

I owe around 13000 pounds now - to a loan and now a collection agency, who sent my old landlady letters. My old boyfriend has helped to pay the loan but wont anymore???- however I am not from the uk and will be returning to my own country, so how could I make myself bankrupt. I imagine I need to be in uk??? I have no money or any things valuable???

Do you ever intend on returning to the UK? If notm and if you genuinely have no money at all, I would write to each creditor and given them your permanent address in whichever country you reside in, and explain to them that you have no way of paying the debts, and that you understand that they may wish to make you bankrupt. It is very doubtful whether anyone actually will.

I wonder how one makes oneself bankrupt?? Do you have to be there and attend court, or can the people you owe money do it???

And to Melanie - I am never returning to uk to live - I have no one there anymore, so you suggest I write to the collection agency and tell them this.

Yes creditors can make you bankrupt, but as this will cost them approximately £2,000 it is unlikely that they will throw good money after bad. You can declare yourself bankrupt for a cost of £485, but will probably need to attend Court.
