Could an expert or someone with much more knowledge than i please give me some advice re sickness, my contract of employment only provides SSP if i am off sick. Recently i had a documented spell in hospital which left a shortfall of some £440.00 in salary that month, i contacted my supervisors team who state that i must still make the payment which i have thanks to my family.Without their help i could not have made the payment.

I am to go into hospital again and will be off sick for two weeks Help!If i dont work i cant make the payment.

Hi Ken - sorry to hear about your problems. Hard enough being sick without the added worry.I'm no expert but I would say your health must come first and I'm surprised your IP wasn't more understanding.

Can you give us some more details, who is your IVA with, how long have you been in it and are your payments up to date?

I agree with Julie - your health must come first. Have you missed any payments in your IVA? If not you may be able to have a payment break and either make up the payments, or tag them onto the end of the IVA.

Good luck x

Sounds like a bit of a strict IP? Who on earth can help being in hospital? I think you need to email him or her and tell them you cant make the payments if youre sick. What do they do when they are unable to work?? You dont need this kind of thing when youre obviously unable to work.... If it was me I would tell him or her to be a bit more understanding, borrowing from family and friends to make sure he gets his whack is totally unreasonable... and totally wrong in my book. IVA's are meant to help ease the burden of debt so you pay what you can afford, not pay, whatever the circumstances. What kind of stress must this be putting you under??? Youre IP will be earning from your situation.

I was thinking you could take a payment break but maybe you wouldn't qualify as the IVA is relatively new...I still would have thought an IP would at least talk through your options.

Ken, have you spoken to your IP directly? From experiences on here, if you're only talking to someone on "the team" you're wasting your time. Email /phone your IP directly and discuss your situation. If your illness is going to prevent you maintaining the IVA then maybe BR is an option? At least if you can discuss it you're mind can be put at rest and you can concentrate on getting better.

Hopefully Melanie or one of the experts will be along soon x

HI Kens,

I'm sorry to hear about your situation.

When I had to go in for surgery and had to be off work, I initially had to send my IP my hospital letter(s) appointments and he agreed to reduce the payment for that time. Maybe you could ask if you can have the break, or make a small token payment as Swans_girl suggested until you are better.

Remember that your health comes first. x

You can miss up to three payments without your IVA going into default. If your IP is not agreeing to you missing a payment or two then that is quite harsh and uncommercial as how do they expect you to pay if you are not earning your full salary.

I suggest a discussion directly with the IP rather than a staff member might be in order.

Reading these posts, I am so glad that I receive full pay for 6 months when I am sick, then I go onto half pay for 6 months. Don't know how I would cope otherwise.

Having always worked within the police service, I've got used to it Ang. It's only reading threads like these that I remember that not a lot of people get paid whilst off sick.
