Tried the TSB today, they did credit checks and was informed they have to do this with everyone now. I was refused all but the most basic cash account.I did not want O/d but this cash account does not allow you even to pay bills or access internet banking. So what next as each time I try another then it will throw up that I am trying Big brother watching !!

jripley, have you tried the co-op cashminder, as far as I know you can pay by direct debit and you have internet banking. I think you need to apply in branch or on the phone. Someone who has one will advise you, I managed to open a normal current account with the co-op as my credit score wasn't duff then! It is now![:(] X

Hi we just opened a Coop Cashminder account and it was easy peasy - took just a few mins over the phone. You can pay in cheques at Post Offices and get debit card plus online banking with DD's and SO's

Seems great so far! [:D]

I am getting desperate and sressed re this . How on earth do I get an alternative account? I must get this into payroll urgently.
TSB did checks and turned me down as I have already said. I must have someway of paying the mortgage over the phone by electron , cheque, internet etc otherwise I will be in the mire even more. Most other bills can be made by those slips they send.
I applied on line for coop and TSB then realised it wouldbe quicker on phone or branch. Apparently online takes 5 working days at least and then if I am refused I have lost another week Also I am going into hospital this week so will,be out of action for a week.
Telephoned Coop - said I had made a mistake applying online and needed a cashminder and details asap re Payroll. Very nice man who said no point doing it over the phone now and wait until today or tuesday as "checks" will be underway This freaked me as each timechecks are done I am refused I have no CCJ's just loads of late payments which is why I am going DMP
I then went into the Abbey, someone here has found them good. Basic account ,no o/d or credit required etc
Lots of prying questions kept bluffing about why I was moving banks. Then answered no to existing credit and store cards etc I was really surprised at the depth of the questions whenI was not applying for credit eg my mortgage co Anyway they were obviusly doing checks as she was completing computer details . Again "referred for a decison till next week" I slunk out like a criminal ,embarased
When I go into the Halifax should I be upfront and tell them I have bad credit rating ans d see if they offer anything
Help/advice,please. My advisor /supervisor in DMPI rightly is emphasisng the necessity /imperative a change banks but HOW
I feel everything closing inand not sleeping agin

Hi Ripski,

Can't answer your other questions but the only thing the Coop 'checked' for me was to see if they needed more ID or if the computer recognised me off electoral register and other sources and so knew I was who I claimed to be. Since it did find me in the system they accepted me there and then.

However I told them up front about the IVA so they knew my credit was bad and it was not a problem - they did say yes if you are in an IVA then this account is fine for you.

Why don't you give them a ring back and see if you can get sorted. I then got all our account details through post in just a few days but sure you could ask for sort code and account number over phone when they accept you so you can give to payroll asap.

Hope this helps.

Eureka I have a cash climber!I rang back to check on application and explain again that I wanted the cash climber. Very helpful, checked the online app and guess what Refused again She then said do you want me to,process you again for the cash one and I have one now in the post. Only snag was she would not give me the account number over phone. Hopefully I'll have time re payroll. But all a huge relief. I guess it's a step a time until you get there

Brill news Ripski!
Glad you're all sorted [:)]
Will keep fingers crossed you get all info in time.
And you are right - one step at a time but you WILL get there in the end that way - good luck! [:D]

Since there are no credit or cheque-book facilities associated with these "basic" bank accounts there is no credit check with Experian etc. However, they do conduct fraud and money laundering checks (and, presumably, terrorist-risk checks). Thus we opened a basic account with Nationwide but it still took almost 2 weeks to open. I guess other banks will do the same.

I think some of the basic bank accounts are credit checked - I'm sure it mentioned about credit checking if you apply for a Halifax basic account.
