how can I ensure I am protected from exploitation when borrowing against my home, and paying over the odds for that loan, yes I have defaults and yes I have a ccj - but there are explanations for these - ill-health. please advise.

Hi pentre - and welcome to the forum.

That is a very difficult question to answer. There is heaps of legislation out there, regulatory bodies and consumer groups, not to mention the Office of Fair Trading. However, all I can suggest is that you seek a second, third and fourth opinion to compare rates and read the small print carefully.
