I have an IVA and live in rented accomodation. Unfortunately I have to move house but cannot get through the application process because of the IVA. Is there anything I can do?

Hi np and welcome to the forum

Why can't you apply for a new rental? The fact that you are in an IVA demonstrates that you can commit to a regular repayment plan and are having to be very careful about budgeting. In my book that makes you the perfect tenant. Not every tenancy agency are prejudiced against people in debt!

Hi
Yes I agree with Mwelanie in that an IVA should not automatically stop you from renting. You may be asked for a larger deposit than normal.Alternatively you cold rent direct from the owner[newspaper ads]and will not be credit scored.

Thanks for your reply.
The agency has said that the IVA has affected my credit score too badly for me to pass the check but that they'll accept me with a guarantor. I'm in the process of getting a copy of my credit report to double check that there's nothing on that is out of date or incorrect. Can I do anything to improve my credit report other than that? I believe you can add notes etc but I'm not sure how to go about doing this.

Is there anyone who could stand guarantor for you? Parents? Other family members?

Hi, n p
I am renting at the moment and have moved recently, I am not in an IVA yet (meeting next Wed) but have had a bad credit rating for a while. My advice would echo what Andy says, try a private landlord and not with an agency, a private landlord might listen to your situation, while the agency’s seem to have a fixed attitude to poor credit scores. I have a very understanding landlord who I contacted through the local paper.

Hope this helps

Cheers, Mark.

Cheers, Mark.

IVA accepted, so 3 down, 57 months to go!!

My one bit of advice, if I can do it, so can you!
