You don't need more information, you just need to type in the name of the bank / creditor that you need and the address comes up. If there is more than one it's worth a call to the creditor concerned to get them to confirm the address.

It's going to show you the address of the Data Controller, who is responsible for getting your file corrected under the Data Protection Act.

Search for the owners, for example First Direct is owned by HSBC. Go for the group level and you'll find the address for HSBC Bank PLC by clicking on the link in the results of the search.

As an example First Direct will be part of HSBC and their Data Controller is based at Canada Square London, rather than Customer Services who are based in Leeds.

They will contact the CRA and get them to change the record for you.

The data controller will be based at the head office of the company you are writing to.

The Data Controller has the responsibility to ensure that their company is complying with the Data Protection Act and its 8 principles.

Hence, if you write to him, I'd suggest recorded delivery, and he does not correct the inacurate information at the CRA the company is technically in breach of the act.

The Information Commissioner has the powers to fine companies upto half a million pounds for breaches to the act, albeit that would probably be a serious breach of data protection.
