Iv'e had a mobile contract with Vodafone for 10 years , don't owe them any money, and as Im now BR they cancelled my contract !

Company policy .. ho hum

At least they let me keep my number and switch over to pay as u go.

Actually they were quite sweet & even gave me £1 credit to 'do' me until I got the chance to go and get some credit.

Life is a box of toffee .. you can chew or suck and they still get stuck in your teeth.

aggh sorry to hear that hamish, did you inform them, as my hubby hasn't informed his mobile contract, he has never missed the bill and always up to date so didn't see the need to inform them.

Hi Kerri - yep stoopid me, I did tell them, it came out in conversation as I wanted to give them my new bank account details for d/d.

To be honest Im not that bothered , the contract was £26 a month and the last time I had to pay more than that was about 5 years ago , going over to pay as u go was something that I was going to investigate but they saved me the bother .

I also have a contract for t mobile - its in my name but its my daughters phone - they are ok with it and said that my contract has 2 months to go and they wont let me out of it ! But they did reduce it to £15 a month - any more than that and she gets pay as u go top ups .

Seems a little over the top by Vodaphone but I guess they have their rules and they are sticking to them. Sounds like you still have the mobile access you need so that's good.

I told Vodafone and they have been fine - they reduced my monthly bill and gave me free texts! So much for company policy, although I suppose they might cut me off at any time!

Can I ask a question please

Regards Utilities, mobiles, telephone, insurance etc. Are they not made aware of your Bankruptcy by the OR, or is this not required if all are up to date??

I am looking to go BR if IVA proposal fails, but cant work out how the practical stuff continues when they freeze your bank account/s? What do you live off? How do you prevent defaulting on your day to day bills ??

Regards

Pippa

The Official Receiver does not tend to contact utility companies unless there are arrears with your bills. As you say you are keeping bankruptcy up your sleeve in the event that your IVA fails, I imagine that you have some disposable income which you will use to live off? You prevent defaulting on your day to day bills by careful budgeting and making sure that you have sufficient allowances in each category of expenditure.

Hi Pippa
the answer to this one is tricky & timing !
Most of my d/d's come out of my back account around the first couple of days of the month , just before going BR I opened a new bank account with the coop ( no overdraft/crdit etc account ), made arrangements for my employer to pay next months pay into the coop , arranged with the coop to transfer all my d/d's from my old bank account with the RBS to my new account with the coop.
Phew .. cancelled all my d/d's on 9/7/07, took all my cash out of my accounts, went BR on 10/7/O7 !
Been living on cash since then as coop account has no money in it - yet. I did miss a couple of later d/d's and am juggling those so that they can start at the coop at the start of next month.
At my first meeting with the OR -saw a chap called an examiner , explained about the coop , he said -- no problem - he has instructed the coop that I am BR but not to freeze my account .

The only whoops so far was today , my child benefit went into a frozen account and I needed the cash, so I went to the OR office explained and they gave me a letter to the bank to say that I could take out £x provided it wasn't over £200 and that I needed the cash for living expenses.. the bank was the halifax ( not my main account ) and I had a bit of trouble with them , but got the money out in the end .
Some points
1) speak to the OR - great people and great service
2) be patient
3) I asked the Tax credit people to change my d/d details and they did the Child benefit at the same time excellant service.
4) Customer service in the Halifax sucks !
5) try and plan ahead .

Good luck
Mish

Thanks Melanie,

Sorry I dont think I explained myself very well. If my IVA fails I may well petition for BR, however have paid 2 months Fees to Thomas Charles and will be able to scrape BR petition costs next month if needs be. My bank account is a basic cashminder account with the CO op which was opened up in readiness for IVA, salary and all d/d are now going through this account. Would this account be frozen?? How would I get access to my salary and pay bills/mortgage, and if it is frozen would this be temporary? I know i am being really thick at the moment ( have read the Gov insolvency web pages but nothing is sinking in) but am putting it down to my nervous breakdown AND I have run out of chocolate!

Thanks

Pippa

Pippa - I think that if you explained it to the OR that they would be sympathetic - Im really impressed with them so far. Tey may well freeze it temporarily but spaek to them and see what they can do , the Coo-op were also very good when I explained my situation

Thanks Mish

your advice is appreciated, all my d/d are paid by the 9th of each month so if I do petition I will do so after this date after removing any funds from the account for household expenditure etc.

just trying to prepare myself for whatever the out come of IVA, as have a 'Not so supportive of IVA's' main creditor. I must say I like many others was definitely going to avoid BR like the plague, however so many people seem to have found it to be not as bad as first appeared, that i am looking more postively at it. Will lose the house due to equity, but I have a 15 year old so I am under the impression I may not have to move out immediately. I hope everything works out for you and wish you all the very best.

Regards

Pippa

PS sorry to hijack your thread

Pippa - hijack away - its not mine -its everyones :-)

Im in a similar position, single dad with 14yr old , Im going to discuss this with my OR , they can allow up to a year before selling . £10k equity .
I am also going to ask them to give me a letter to give to the local council .. basically saying that I am BR and the house will be sold , Im going to use that to see if I can get myself up the council list as it sounds like renting after BR is tricky .

Mish

The OR sounds really supportive, be interested to know how that goes with the council, was wondering how they view this situation, have my pets too so think I am really going to struggle to find somewhere privately.
Have just checked and the court in my area that deals with BR is right next to my office!! Couldnt get any closer if they tried, Will have to go in disguise - no makeup and a dodgy hat , what am i talking about thats what i usually look like.
