Hat's off to you for considering such a positive step. As for teaching, I'm sure you would be fantastic and would have a lot to offer.
With regards to books etc.. You shoud check out all the free mathematics and statistics courses on the OU website. There is some fantastic free information online in other places too if you do some digging. However I'm sure no one will mind me posting the OU link: http://www.open.ac.uk/openlearn/home.php
My local educational authourity run cheap (and sometimes free) modular courses in high schools for adult learners. It may be worth checking what's right on your door step. I have previously used ours to pursue sailing and navigational courses and found it a fantastic place for learning.
Keep your eye on your goals, remember why you want to do it and I'm sure you'll find it an easy and worthwhile way to achieve all that you want to.
I hope that you get what you want to do FD - with so much advice given to you you could be spoilt for choice.

Not long to go then until you start working civilised shifts again FD!
Be good to see you back on here regularly.
