We have just entered into a IVA active from April and have just received a letter from our Bank First Direct telling us they are closing our account in 30 days, we do not owe them any money, have never used the overdraft and have £4300 paid in each month. I have tried at several banks for an account as recommended and have been declined by them all, problem is when you go into a bank to open an account all they do is apply online, we even asked to speak to the Bank Manager at Lloyds and she basically said 'Computer says NO'. We need a basic bank account with direct debit facilities and a debit card nothing else, I am begining to feel that I will get a cheque from work each month for £4300 and no where to pay it into. I am desperate please can anyone help I have tried Lloyds, HAlifax, Alliance and Leicester all the rest seem to require online applications which of course will be turned down imeadiatly.

Hay sandi

congrats on getting the IVa sorted, its a great feeling to feel things are finally getting sorted!

Many other guys on here have recommended the co-op for a new account when you have an IVA! I went with the RBS just over 3 years ago and they were very welcoming!

Hope you get it sorted soon

First Direct are well known for closing accounts, regardless of whether or not you owe them money. HSBC are the same.

Try the Co-op, you should be able to get their basic cashhminder account and you have to apply either online or in branch. You can't do it online.

Hi, we started our process in march of this year. We currently bank with tsb. I didn't want the embarrasment of speaking to people directly and just applied online with no problems at all. Good luck, it must be frustrating x

It's only those two who will close accounts, they actively trawl the insolvency register.

Thanks for your suggestions unfortunatly the COp Op Bank is one of our creditors. Someone has suggested THINK bank however I know it is supported by RBS another creditor is it possible for the RBS to take money out of a THINK account even though it is not directly with them.

Your money will be fine with Thinkbanking - the only problem is that you do have to pay a monthly fee for it, but you are guaranteed and account and RBS cannot touch it.

There is another one as well called Secure Trust, this is also a paid for account, but again you are guaranteed acceptance.

I hope you find that account very soon, I'm with Natwest (Step Account) basic but does the job. x
IVA final payment left the bank on the 26th January 2013...looking forward to a debt free future.

You could try Nationwide Building Society as another option.

Hi, I have a Natwest Step account and have found them to be very helpful. Was worried as I owed money to RBS but account runs fine and no fees. I'm new to this so no expert but I've had no problems with this account.
IVA started Sept 09. Glad to be on the way to being debt free

Natwest step account is perfect.
No need to go in store and answer embarrassing questions or be made to feel like you need to tell them everything. You can simply apply for this account on-line and you get a decision quickly.
-On-line banking
-New VISA debit card (previously SOLO)
-D/D allowed
-No fees

Also HSBC/First Direct don't allow customers who are in an IVA or BR do they?

No they dont! There terrible! I had a friend who has an IVA a few years ago and one day he just had a letter from HSBC satying 'b***** off' [:0] and banging on about not telling them she had an IVA, which she actually did!!

Boooo Hisssss to the HSBC!!! Certainly one of the bank baddies i feel![:D]

I have a Natwest Step account as well, with a Debit Card, Direct Debit facilities, works really well and no problem to set up after my DMP started.
