Hi,

I went bankrupt in Oct 2005 and was discharged in May 2006. I was recently looking at opening a new bank account (with a branch closer to home) and Barclays (for example) asked if I was bankrupt?? Am i still bankrupt even though I am discharged?? if so how long does it last?? forever?? I hope someone can help

Viki

I think the best way to deal with this is tell them that you are a discharged bankrupt. That way you are being upfront. They will know anyhow as it will show on any credit check for 6 yrs after br.

Once you have received your discharge you are no longer bankrupt. This will, however, remain on your credit records for six years following the date of the bankrutpcy order.

Ok, thanks. That's helped me out. I'm just not sure what bank to apply with. I'm with Co-Op but my nearest branch is miles away and I'd like to have one in my home town so if I need to I can draw out money over the counter. My cashminder account won't allow me to purchase items with my electron card that are priced over £250 which I've only just realised after being very embarrassingly declined in a shop. My partner who ran away from his debts about 6 years ago has just managed to open a proper Barclays account so I'm a bit jealous and pee'd off after I declared things properly and he just run away.

You can use any post office to make deposits and withdrawals from your cashminder so you don't really need to live close to a branch. Not sure if there is a limit from PO but you could always phone them to ask.
