Hi Adrian and welcome to the forum. It all depends on whether you your bank is one of your creditors. I had a Current Plus account with Lloyds TSB and as they weren't one of my creditors I was able to keep it, and keep the Visa debit card and chequebook.

As far as I am aware Woolwich is part of Barclays so you'd probably be better off opening a bank account with a bank who are not linked to your creditors.

All Woolwich current and savings accounts become Barclays accounts from early May 2007.

If you have a debt with Barclaycard it will effect you.

Might be easier Adrian if you list who you have tried and whether you asked for a basic account.

I seem to remember people on here saying that it's quite easy to get a basic bank account with Abbey, and there's also the Natwest Step account. Also Nationwide might be worth a try, and the Co-operative bank. If all else fails there is Think Banking, but that is a managed account and they charge you £12.50 per month. You do get a Maestro card though rather than a Solo or Electron card. A lot of people on here have an account with them, and I opened one on Tuesday with no problems and I'm bankrupt! I can't really judge them yet, but I know Andy Davie thinks very highly of them, and possibly Aguise.

We've just opened two joint accounts with Smile and Alliance & Leicester (incl. debt card, cheque book, internet banking etc). Neither my partner or myself have any debts with the Co-op - however my partner does have an A&L credit card which is run by MBNA.

So although we've been accepted by A&L for a joint account is it possible that they may cancel it (as going for IVA)......or are we safe because the debt is with MBNA?
