I have personal debts of £43,000. I am seriously considering an IVA. One worry I have is that I work for the Halifax bank and have about £25,000 debt with them. Will I have to let my manager know aboout this? will I lose my job? can they let my manger know if I choose not to? PLease help. In a panic does not even start to explain how I feel.

Hi tammie and welcome to the forum

You will need to check your terms and conditions of employment to see whether you would lose your job in the event of proposing an IVA or going bankrupt. I suggest that you have a confidential chat with your human resources department who ought not to tell your line manager of the nature of your discussions.

Hi Tammie,

You would need to double check your terms and conditions of employment, if it specifically says that you cannot go bankrupt or enter into any voluntary arrangements then yes, your job will be affected.

It is important that you check your contract and discuss this with an HR worker. We have successfully proposed many IVAs for people who owe money to their employers, even some who worked in the financial sector. Don't rule out an IVA because of this but it is important to check with your contract and HR first.

Hi Sarah and welcome to the forum

I am sure that an IVA would not affect your job, but do check your contract of employment to be sure. If you have colleagues who are bankrupt, then this evidences the fact that your employer probably does not have a prejudiced view of personal insolvency.
