THANKU 4 REPLY X
I DID ASK-THEY WERE VERY STRINGENT THAT IT HAD TO BE A PASSPORT-I HAVE EXCELLENT PHOTOGRAPHIC WORK ID-THEY SAID NO GOOD. THEY SAID BIRTH CERTIFICATE IS ONLY GOOD IF YOURE UNDER 16. I HAD SAME PROBLEM WITH HSBC WHO BASICALLY TOLD ME TO BOG OFF-NOT BECAUSE OF CREDIT RATING BUT BECAUSE OF ID. THIS IS DRIVING ME NUTS!

As Kallis says why not try the Co-op Cashminder account if you're worried about Lloyds?

Try using your expired passport - it's photo id after all.

I imagine most banks will require photo id to open a new account.

The Co-op don't always. If you open the Cashminder account on the phone I don't think they always need ID. They did with me as I'd been at my address for such a short time, but I've heard of other people opening accounts without ID. The main thing is you need to be on the electoral roll.

As Kallis says, if you need photo ID, try using your expired passport - I can't really see the bank staff looking that closely at the dates.

Good point Skippy, I forgot about the electoral roll.

Mind you, when I opened my Nationwide account, I did it online and I still had to go into a branch and take proof of identity and address even though we are both on the voters list.

An expired passport cannot be used as proof of ID for official purposes. Banks have very stringent Money Laundering rules to comply with, and if they say they need to see a passport then you will have to apply for a new one. Insolvency Practitioners have similar requirements under this legislation as well, so if you are thinking of putting forward an IVA, you may have to produce the required evidence in any case.

I recently opened an Abbey Instant Plus account (Visa Electron)- I did this by walking in to my local branch as you get a far better service face to face - the first thing I told them was about the IVA - be upfront and honest and all should be ok. I did need to have either driving licence, passport (in date) or utility bills (2 off if no DL or Passport).

Also Nationwide Cashbuilder account for contingency fund recently opened (on-line) - no ID needed for this !

I find it very unfair that someone is expected to pay £72 to get a passport to prove who they are - to me that's a waste of money if you don't intend to travel on it! It's also a complete rip off if you do intend to travel!

Sometimes having a driving licence and passport isn't enough - when I moved and had to change doctors I had to argue with them to take a bank statement as proof of ID as they insisted that I had to have a utility bill in my name, which I don't have. Eventually they agreed to use the bank statement, but they weren't happy.

I am sure that the Co-op will let you have an account. We have many forum posters with similar accounts, and this particular bank do appear to be very supportive to people in financial difficulty.

I presume when you say the Co-op are thinking about it they have referred your application? That doesn't necessarily mean no. A lot of people have had their applications referred and still got the account. Did you apply for a Cashminder account or a regular current account?

A current account is fine as long as you have no overdraft facility on it. If they offer one, you can turn it down.

Try Yorkshire Bank, I seem to remember someone on here being able to open one with them.

There is also Thinkbanking, I think one or two people on here use them as well.

THIS IS SUCH A FANTASTIC SITE REALLY NICE PEOPLE. THANKU ALSO MELANIE YOURE EXCELLENT!. I SUPPOSE COOP COULD SAY YES. THEY SAID ITS BEING REFERRED TO UNDERWRITERS-THATS WHATS WORRYING ME-EVEN WITHOUT IVA IM A MASSIVE CREDIT RISK. I HAVE NO CCJS OR DEFAULTS BUT LOTS OF LATE PAYMENT AND OBVIOUSLY TOO MUCH DEBT. THE LLOYDS ACCOUNT IS GOOD BUT I THINK IF I OPENED IT(ID PERMITTING!) AND THEN DID AN IVA THEY WOULD PROBABLY SHUT IT DOWN ON LEARNING OF MY LARGE HALIFAX DEBT ! SOB

Did you apply for a Co-op Cashminder or a Co-op current account? How did you apply - branch, telephone or internet?
