Hi Mrs Positive,

My wife has exactly the same scheme at her school which works fine.

& yep, pre-IVA I didn't give it a 2nd thought - I even had all sorts of direct debits set up for various charities as well.

It's because we budget so tightly & carefully that these unexpected expenses can really hurt!

My husband works in a gym of 30+ where evrytime its your birthday, wedding, engagement, new born, promotion you name it you are expected to get the cakes in.

You are condemned however if you do not turn up with anything less than cream filled!!

Fortunately for him I am an ex pastry chef and know a few short cuts in making something a lot more impressive than it actually is.

As he is one of the management however he is expected to dish out christmas pressies to his seniors as a "thank You" for all of their work throughout the year, which is ususally a crate of beer each.

Sounds good doesn't it cream cakes and beers for a load of Physical Instructors lol!!

A good way to deal with this is for the person who's birthday it is the person's whose birthday it is bring a cake in and share it. That way everyone else gets a treat and it saves a lot of money for everyone. Why not suggest it?
xx
It's nice to be back......

Hi tigger - £50 in one month[:0]

No way would I do this....there is far more important things for me to spend £50 on.

As I am field based I don't get his pressure but when I do go into the office they don't collect for everyones birthday. The management at my place send flowers if someone is getting married, has had a death in the family or had a baby.
Only on very special occasions does a collection come round, like a retirement.

They do seem to have the bring cakes in on birthday's tradition but I am never in on my birthday so don't do this..
Be positive & look after yourself, there are more important things in life than debts....

Best Wishes

Emma x

We have fairly frequent collections for those off sick etc. They vary £1 for flowers if having an op to £5 if they are leaving. If they are pregant we buy the baby a present , we have two at the moment so I am sure the baby box will come out soon.
Apologies if you read the post before I edited it half of it dissapeared.

Ang

I never sponsor anyone and I never give, I'm a right stick in the mud, but never expect anything back either. If my daughter brings a sponsor form home, I just make a £2 contribution but do no ask others for sponsors.
IVA final payment left the bank on the 26th January 2013...looking forward to a debt free future.

I don't mind asking people for sponsorship - they can only say no. I've done the Race for Life for Cancer Research for the last few years, firstly in memory of my dad, then in celebration of my uncle and last year sadly in memory of my uncle. I've nabbed the monthly charity money for sponsorship every year, and also asked if anyone wants to sponsor me and I've raised about £800 over the 3 years. My opinion is it's a very good cause, and if you don't ask you don't get. I always explain what it's for and tell people I won't be offended if they don't sponsor me.

I won't be able to do it this year as I'll be on holiday, so I'll make sure one month's money goes to Cancer Research anyway, and I'll be back next year!

I'm doing the race for life on May 18th in Stamford with my daughter and another forum member from IVA.co.uk eh kandh!! I've put my sponsor form on my desk at work and people do sponsor me but I never take anything in from the school or they all bring in theirs from the schools and it's just goes on and on. My dad died (brain tumour) and I'll do it for him.

At the end of last year I told my team of 26 staff enough was enough - and suggested that everyone on January 31st donated £10 to the tin and all that was collected would be donated to charity instead - by doing this we all saved over £50 in the year and did some good for others!
Sharing from experiences of dealing with debt

There is a solution for everyone .... Just need to stay positive !

Why do all the birthday collections always come around all at once? The busiest months for collections always seem to be in the summer months where I work.

And like when it comes round to you, by the time you have brought the cream cakes you don't really benefit, only a bigger waistline lol

As for charity collections, well I choose what I donate to and have put a stop on that until the IVA is completed, I can then start giving again once it has been completed. Also far better to GAYE because the charities can collect the tax back and our company will match our contributions in that way which is another added bonus.
We're willing to wipe the slate clean, give you a fresh start. All that we're asking in return is your cooperation.

GOOD LUCK WITH THE RACE FOR LIFE LESLEY!

AT MY WORKS WE GIVE 50P FOR FLOWERS FOR SICKNESS, OPERATIONS ETC AND £1 FOR SPECIAL BIRTHDAYS WEDDINGS ETC - DONT THINK THATS BAD AT ALL, I WOULD DEFINATELY NOT LIKE IT IF I WAS BEING ASKED FOR A FIVER A TIME. WHEN ITS OUR BIRTHDAY WE BUY CAKES, I DONT MIND THAT EXCEPT THE ODD ONE WILL EAT THEM WHEN IT IS YOUR BIRTHDAY BUT NOT BUY ANY WHEN ITS THEIRS - I HAVE NO OBJECTION TO THEM NOT BUYING IF THEY DONT INDULGE WHEN OTHERS HAVE BOUGHT!

BARB X
12 down - 60 to go! woo hoo!

Good luck for the Race for Life Lesley and Kandh. Are you running it? I have always power walked it - I started training to run it last year and hurt my knee. I definitely want to do it again next year as there's such a good atmosphere and it's such a good cause.
