Hi

Just gone on this website for the first time - but I guess it will take me a good while to read thru all the comments, so sorry if there are similar stories.

My partner and I are just coming up to our 2nd year in our IVA. By the end we will have paid off just over half of the overall debt based on current salaries, however, we would really like to start a family in the next few years. This may sound foolish wanting to bring a baby into a situation where we are in debt, however for personal reasons we don't want to say that we will definetely not consider having kids until after the IVA. Because of the job I do (working daft shifts!) I would need 1 year off on maternity leave - the last 3 months being unpaid but allowed by my place of work. After that I would go half time. My question is how would the IVA then work, if our monthly contributions went down from £1,038 per month to less than a hundred for 3 months and then back up to £500.00 (when h/time) but no more?
My partner thinks they wouldn't allow it but I think without sounding stupid and immature surely they can't stop people having families!
Thanks, Kerry

Hi Kerry and welcome to the forum

How can it be foolish to bring a new life into the world?!!! It is fantastic, and I am sure that you will be tremendous parents and educate your children from the lessons that you have both learned along the rocky road of debt.

With regard to your period of maternity pay, you need to put forward revised proposals to your Supervisor just as you have explained above and ask him to issue these to creditors. I would have thought you would have no problem in receiving the creditors support, and this serves to further demonstrate that no-one should put their lives on hold for the sake of a few debts.

If you were my client, I would have no hesitation in supporting your request for varied payments for that important year.

Good luck with all your plans.

Hi Kerry
I agree with Melanie. I mean if everybody who had debts stopped having children I think the birth rate would shrink to zero!

Absolutely, being in an IVA should not preclude you from looking to start a family. Talk to your IP, I'm sure they will support your decision and put the proposal to the creditors when the time is right.

Hi Kerry,
I really cannot advise you about altering payments into your IVA but I read your post and it really struck a chord with me so I felt that I had to reply, so indulge me, will ya?!?!
Like others have said earlier, bringing a new life into this world is a lifechanging event and believe me, however hard it is, you'll find a way to cope.
I've got 2 children (3 & 5yrs) and in the months before I entered my IVA, I lost a baby which broke my heart and made me realise that what my children need is love, cuddles and a mammy who'll make tents out of chairs and sheets. Yes, the material goods are lovely but they really are the essentials for happy children.
Within 2wks of our IVA being approved last August, I found out that I'm pregnant again - Our baby was due last week and although the little so-and-so is hanging on in there, I don't regret a thing about the timing of this baby.
I'm currently on maternity leave and as soon as I find out exactly what my maternity pay will be, I have to inform my IP and go about changing our monthly payments until I return to work
Yes, I know that the next few months are gonna be harder that I'd like them to be but this baby will never go without a mammy, daddy, brother and sister who love him/her to bits - And who could ever regret that?
You live your life, appreciate every single moment of it and look forward to holding your baby in your arms - Believe me, it's the start of something fantastic and please don't deny yourself that joy. You've made your mistakes (just like we all have - hence this website!!) but you've faced up to them and that's what's important.
Sorry it's so long-winded but I'm still trying to work out a way to get this baby moving and I've given up on curry and driving on bumpy roads!!
Take care,
Ricki. xx
