i'm the saddo with bread - it goes mouldy far too quickly so freeze it in batches of 2 slices and just take out what i need the night before - that way it tends to last longer especially if i alternate sarnies and soup for lunch!! my food/household budget is £150 and i work away so have to use some of that to pay food and it takes 3 weeks to get back via expenses so some weeks its mega tough - tend to "drop in" at moms couple times a week she's always got a saucepan in her hand ha ha

I really feel strongly that the "Powers that Be" who stipulate these figures for essential things like food should try and feed a family on the amounts they say we need to have to cope with! Having got a 13 yr old son whoeats as much as his dad, i feel i'm actully feeding 3 adults not 2 and a child! because a) he's alot bigger than me and eats accordingly and b) hes growng at such a rate i can't keep up with clothes either!!:(
What don't kill us makes us stronger!

Hi Guys

Just been reading this thread...

I am currently considering into an IVA myself...so what is the amount which you are allowed to go up to each month for food allowance for a single person? (As I understand it there are some 'recommended allowances' or something for certain things each month).

I originally put £100 per month but am now worried that this will not be enough, not that I eat a huge amount or anything but "25 a week is not much really to live off food wise!!!

Hey Snowman, you should put down what you actually spend. Have a look at this http://www.iva.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7238
Remember, these are ONLY guidelines.

Snowman I agree with Viki, you must make sure that you make yourself a viable budget, no frills but what you need. This is for cleaning products as well and dont forget to include incidentals like prescriptions dental. There is no point in 'trying to make it work' when its unworkable. I know its a stressful time and youre probably desperate to get things accepted but an unrealistic proposal will fail. Make sure you dont go with the first IVA company you phone either, check them out, IVA.com have a list of companies, IP's and user feedback.

Food prices across Europe have risen by twice the rate of inflation in a year, new figures reveal.

Between April 2007 and April this year overall inflation reached 3.6% - but food prices went up by 7.1%.

The price increase for milk, cheese and eggs was 14.9% in the European Union - 15.7% in the UK. Bread and cereals prices rose by 10.7% in the EU and meat by 4.1%, compared with 8.5% and 4.1% in the UK.

Our IVA started in October 2005 apologies I'm working nights and sleep deprived! We asked for a review as my husband hasn't had an increase in his salary since the IVA started and I have started a new job bringing out £100 per month less than before. Incredibly although all our bills have gone up the IP (or one of his "team") rang me yesterday to say they could only reduce my payments to £908 from £933 and we would be getting a call from collections regarding paying the arrears. To say I'm in shock puts it mildly and to be quite honest I think the IVA will fail. We are just waiting for the letter explaining his findings before we do anything but I'm in despair at the moment and can't see a way forward. If we go BR I lose my job - that's a fact - and we'll lose our home - not much equity so nobody wins, it's crazy. When I queried the food part he wouldn't budge and just said that's the credit crunch for you, economies will have to be made. Our company is Debt Free Direct and I absolutely would NOT recommend them to anyone.

That is terrible, can you try to get your IP email address and talk to them and not one of their team?

hope it all works out better for you.

My review is due and I have entered a figure of £350 which equates to approx £80 per week.

This is for food, home essentials(ie. light bulbs, flannels, tea towels etc) and personal hygeine (ie. smellies, razors, soap etc)

Last year the figure was £310.
