Hi All
I am 18 months into my IVA and I only have a cashcard Flexaccount with the Nationwide so dont have any access to debit cards and buying things online etc. I know there are bank accounts that have debit cards with a baisc account but with all that going on at the moment is changing banks a good thing espacally as I am in an IVA so I was wondering if anyone could recomend a good prepay card there are so many on the market that its hard to know whats good and bad so any help or advice would be great.
Thanks
Adam

Hi,

If you use the search function at the top of the screen and search for prepay you will see there have been numerous threads on this.

With regards to basic bank accounts you could try Natwest or Co-op which offer quite good accounts with either a SOLO or VISA ELECTRON debit card, providing they are not one of your creditors

I have a Paypal card which I find useful, but check out the following link for comparisons:

http://www.iva.co.uk/prepaid-cards-comparison.asp

There are other cards around as well, but check carefully as some of them do have a hefty monthly charge.

Thanks for the link, I have been looking for one of these. Just had a read and a bit curious as to why "Tuxedo Prepaid Card * recommended by IVA.co.uk " is recommended when "Fair FX Currency Card " looks like a much better deal when you take into account that Tuxedo has this "2.95% (min 99p, max £1.50) per transaction" and the Fair FX has this "FREE for purchase transactions made in the UK and overseas". Surely the Fair FX works out better for people??
Happy to be corrected, just can't work it out in my head.

Why pay for a prepaid card and each transaction on some, when you can get a eletron or mastro card for some basic bank accounts? I couldn't afford to in an IVA!

Don't forget some people can't have an account with a debit card as it depends on who their creditors are. Also, Visa Electron isn't as widely accepted a a Visa debit card. As far as I know the Paypal card doesn't have any fees when you use it.

I couldn't get a debit card - I only have a cashpoint card, and that account was taken out before I was in an IVA!

I have a Paypal card which doesn't cost me anything per month. I'm quite happy with that.

It depends whether you need the functionality of Visa or Mastercard. Check around as some pre-paid cards offer a bill payments facility.

Tuxedo are also offering a direct debit facility, not just standing orders which a lot of prepaid cards don't do.

I have the paypal card - after initial purchase (£4.95),there are no monthly fees, and no transaction charges for the UK. I only pay £1 a time to top up if I do so at a Post Office or Paypoint, so I'm quite impressed with that.

I have a SOLO card through Natwest (5 Years plus) and not once have I not been able to use it in a shop or online. Do not feel that I am missing out anymore by not having a Visa card

I mostly use cash now when I'm shopping, just use the prepay for online stuff. Don't really miss having a debit card.
